Variety: SL 28

Region: Nyeri

Altitude: 1,700-1,850 meters above sea level

Process: washed

Roast: filter

Q-grader's rate: 87.25

SL28 variety, grown in the Mukurweini district of Kenya's Nyeri region and processed washed with fermentation. Cherries are selectively handpicked and delivered to the washing station, where they are pulped and fermented before being washed and dried on raised beds.

The cup is floral with bergamot as the primary note, medium-high acidity of malic, citric, and tartaric character, and a medium, creamy body.

Ashemali is produced by smallholder members of KCCE — Kenya Cooperative Coffee Exporters — operating in the Nyeri region, with this particular lot sourced from the Mukurweini district. The cooperative model is central to how coffee production works in this part of Kenya: individual farmers, many managing plots of less than half a hectare, deliver their ripe cherries to a shared washing station where processing is carried out collectively to a consistent standard. KCCE works across Nyeri to connect these smallholder producers with international specialty buyers, giving farmers access to markets that would be difficult to reach independently while maintaining traceability back to the district level.

Nyeri, Kenya

Nyeri is widely regarded as one of Kenya's finest coffee-growing regions and one of the most celebrated origins in the world for washed Arabica. Situated between the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range, the area benefits from fertile volcanic soils, reliable rainfall, and altitudes around 1,700 to 1,850 meters that promote slow, even cherry development.

SL28 and SL34 are the dominant varieties grown here, both known for producing cups of exceptional complexity — typically characterised by a distinctive layered acidity, floral aromatics, and blackcurrant or berry notes that have made Nyeri coffee a reference point for the specialty trade. Farms in the region are predominantly small, family-run plots, and the washing station cooperative model has been essential to maintaining quality and consistency across many individual harvests.
