AeroPress recipe - how to use it?

The AeroPress is a unique and versatile coffee brewing device that uses gentle air pressure to extract rich and flavorful coffee. It's beloved by both beginners and professionals for its simplicity, portability, and the clarity it brings to a cup.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to brew excellent coffee using the standard (upright) AeroPress method — step by step.

Why Choose the AeroPress?

The AeroPress uses manual pressure to push water through ground coffee, resulting in a cup that's cleaner than French press but fuller and richer than drip or pour-over. Thanks to the paper filter, your brew will be smooth and grit-free, while the pressure gives you a fuller body and enhanced aroma.

It’s also incredibly forgiving and customizable — perfect for experimenting with grind sizes, temperatures, and steeping times.

What You’ll Need

Essential equipment:

  • Fresh coffee beans (or pre-ground)

  • AeroPress

  • Paper filters

  • Hot water (preferably filtered)

Optional but recommended tools:

  • Grinder

  • Digital scale

  • Timer

Grind Size

The ideal grind for AeroPress is medium-fine — slightly finer than pour-over, but not as fine as espresso. The texture should feel like fine sand. AeroPress is flexible with grind sizes, so feel free to adjust to suit your taste preferences.

If your coffee tastes sour or under-extracted, try a finer grind. If it's bitter or harsh, go slightly coarser.

Coffee Dose and Water Ratio

  • Coffee: 18 grams

  • Water: 230 ml total

  • Brew temperature: 93°C

You can scale this recipe slightly depending on your preferences, but we find 18g to 230ml offers a balanced and flavorful cup.

Water Temperature

We recommend heating your water to 93°C. If you don’t have a thermometer, bring your water to a boil and let it sit for about 30–60 seconds.

Step-by-Step brewing instructions

1. Prepare your AeroPress

  • Place a paper filter (we recommend to use two of them) in the cap and rinse it with hot water to eliminate any papery taste.

  • Attach the cap to the AeroPress and place it over your mug or server.

2. Add coffee

  • Add 18 grams of freshly ground coffee into the chamber. Shake gently to level the bed.

3. Bloom (pre-infusion) - the first pour

  • Start your timer.

  • Pour 50ml of hot water into the chamber, fully saturating the grounds.

  • Let it sit for 30 seconds. This allows gases to escape and improves extraction.

4. Add remaining water

  • After blooming, slowly add the remaining 180ml of water, bringing the total to 230ml.

  • Give it a quick but gentle stir (about 5–10 seconds) to ensure all grounds are immersed.

  • Insert the plunger just enough to create a seal — this prevents the coffee from dripping through before pressing.

  • Let it steep for an additional 30–40 seconds.

5. Press

  • Begin pressing gently. Apply steady pressure — not too fast, not too slow.

  • The press should take 30–40 seconds. You’ll hear a slight hissing sound when it’s done.

6. Serve and enjoy

  • Remove the AeroPress, unscrew the cap, and push out the spent puck into the compost or trash.

  • Rinse your AeroPress for next time.

  • Enjoy your coffee as is, or dilute with hot water for an Americano-style cup.

Final Thoughts

The AeroPress is a fantastic brewing tool that offers both convenience and control. Whether you're brewing at home, in a hotel, or outdoors, this method delivers a delicious, clean, and flavorful cup every time.
